Boat Safety

Before setting out ensure:

1. Your boat is safe.
2. You are proficient in using the boat and have adequate training.
3. You have enough fuel and more for your intended use.
4. You have checked the weather for the duration of your journey and are confident in the conditions.
5. There are sufficient and suitable lifejackets/life rafts for everyone onboard.
6. Passengers need to know what to do in an emergency and how to call for assistance.
7. You tell land based friends where you intend to boat and when you will be back.

Whilst under way

1. Concentrate on driving the boat. If you are towing a skier you need someone else on board to watch them.
2. Follow the 'Rules of the Road'.
3. If you see a potential dangerous situation ahead, slow down.
4. Drive the boat within your and the boat's limits.
5. Consider your passengers comfort and safety.
6. Respect local bylaws.

Some boats are easier to drive than others and if you are new the world of boating then err on the side of caution. A smaller boat is often easier to control in and around the marina. Before purchasing a new boat I would always advise taking a course through a recognized training school. This can be a basic two-day Powerboat level 2 course or a more in depth skipper course.

When buying a boat check for all round visibility, maneuverability, tracking and sea handling. All boats perform well in flat water so make the trial worthwhile and choose a rougher day.
